Yoga and the Summer Solstice
Many people who practise yoga have a sense that we are spiritual beings having a human existence. We are reminded of this every time our yoga practice allows us to touch upon an unfamiliar state. Perhaps you’ve felt dream-like during a yoga class, or left a session feeling floaty or ‘expanded’? Have colours seemed more intense, sounds more refined or, as the T-shirt says, do you just feel “I’m nicer after yoga”? All of these are signs that we can shift our energetic state through yoga. We can move from the dense and physical of our bodies to tap into more subtle and, as some might put it, higher vibrational states of being. Ancient texts suggest that we humans have simply forgotten our true, higher-energy nature and the practice of yoga is one way to bring us back to source – a place of infinite peace and potential.
So what’s the connection to the Summer Solstice? Many solstice scholars, astrologers and spiritual folk believe that this is a critically important time of year for accessing higher forms of energy. At a specific time on this day, the sun reaches its highest point, planets align and ley lines (a kind of energy grid) across the planet deliver energy upgrades to all who are open to receive. It’s why people gather at places like Stonehenge and Galstonbury at the solstice, to collectively tune in and add to, the gifts of the moment.
So can yoga help you access the energy upgrade of the solstice? Maybe, when practised in a deeply meditative way, slowing the mind and creating space to receive. I will be offering a solstice practice this afternoon at 3pm, to coincide with the actual moment of the Summer Solstice 2023. It will be based on the techniques of Yoga Nidra – a profoundly calming and relaxing form of yoga that allows you to enter a place of consciousness somewhere between wakefulness and sleep.
